Geocongress 2018 Student Funding – Call for Applications

The deadline for applications submissions is Friday 20th April 2018
A major aim of Geocongress 2018 is to offer postgraduate students the opportunity to present their research at a national conference, attend scientific sessions across a range of disciplines, and network with prominent researchers in their field. Every effort has been made to keep registration costs for the conference as low as possible, but we understand that there are additional costs that may prohibit attendance.

We are happy to announce that the Student Support Subcommittee of Geocongress 2018 will provide financial assistance to deserving postgraduate students to attend the conference, based on the outcome of a competitive application process.

This funding will cover the costs of registration for the conference, and/or transport and accommodation, depending on the applicant’s location, up to a maximum of R5000. Accommodation costs, where applicable, will cover the 4 nights of the main conference (Tuesday 17 July to Friday 20 July). Extended stays will be at the applicant’s own cost. Workshop or fieldtrip costs, if applicable, will not be covered.

To be eligible for financial support, you need to be a full-time Honours, MSc or PhD student registered for the 2018 academic year at a tertiary institution in South Africa or one of its neighbouring countries. You also need to be the presenting author of an oral or poster presentation at the Geocongress. You are not eligible if you have funding dedicated to attending the Geocongress from another source.

To be considered, candidates need to submit their applications to by no later than 20 April 2018. Each application must include the following:

  1. Proof of registration/student status for 2018;
  2. A short Curriculum Vitae;
  3. A copy of your ID/passport;
  4. A letter of support from your supervisor;
  5. A copy of your submitted abstract (as presenting author); and,
  6. A motivation letter, specifically explaining your need for support and the benefits of being able to attend the conference (max. 300 words).

Applications will be reviewed as they are received by the Student Support Subcommittee. Financial support will be awarded subject to the availability of funds and the merit of the application. Candidates will be informed by email of the success of their application by 7 May 2018.
